ORIGIN
In the year after the first atomic bomb was used on Japan, Professor
Josiah Rhonne tries with his experiments in transmutations to end the
threat of atomic war. By subjecting a person to neutron bombardment
the professor hopes to change the human body’s atomic structure
and make the tissue immune to radioactivity. But the professor needs
a human guinea pig for his experiments. "I must have a human subject,
even if I have to become a kidnapper and a murderer!" he exclaims.
Fortunately, the professor encounters William Burns, better known to
his fellow bums as "Willie the Warf Rat." Burns was a beachcomber
and derelict, after a Nazi torpedo exploded too close to him rendering
Willie into a shell of his former self. With nothing to lose William
Burns volunteers for the experiment. But an accidental lab explosion
turns Willie Burns into the ATOMIC THUNDERBOLT.
