In 1939 23-year-old
Hollis Masen becomes a New York City policeman. But not content
to simply contain crime, Hollis longs to do more, especially after discovering
comics (in particular the Superman comics from late 1938) and wishing
he could battle crime like the comic book heroes. When Hooded Justice
becomes the first real-life masked adventurer. Hollis Mason, decides to
follow his example. Hollis gets into shape and devises a costume, but
what to call his secret alter ego? Since his fellow officers humorously
nicknamed him “night-owl” for refusing to go out after work, Hollis throws
the joke back in their faces and calls himself Nite-Owl. Now possessing
a name and a costume, Hollis steps forth to battle crime on his own terms.
Before long media attention creates a mystery-man (and mystery-woman)
fad, and Nite-Owl joins other masked crimefighters in the Minutemen of
America, a group in which Nite-Owl serves proudly until its final days
in late 1949. Thereafter Nite-Owl works on his own but with less effectiveness
until he retires in May 1962 to become an auto mechanic. Nite-Owl possesses
great athletic abilities and a keen set of detective skills, but more
importantly a strong moral sense, which raised him above more dubious
heroes. end transmission |
