Hooded Justice

History is made in Queens New York in the fall of 1938: One night a man and his girlfriend are walking home from the theater when three armed men accost them. The crooks beat the man and threaten to rape the woman. But suddenly a powerfully built masked man descends on the group; he disarms the three men and beats them into pulp. One man is crippled for life.

A week later, another crime at a supermarket is prevented by a similarly muscled costumed man. He crashes in through the supermarket window while a robbery is in progress and furiously beats one crook so badly that his confederates eagerly surrender to the police. The newspapers connect the two incidents involving a masked vigilante and dub him "Hooded Justice." Thus, the first masked crimefighter appears before the public.

In 1939 Hooded Justice joins other mystery-men in the Minutemen of America and stays with the group until its disbanding in 1949. Then Hooded Justice drops out of sight permanently after refusing to reveal his identity before a special congressional committee. At the same time, Rolf Muller, a well-known circus strongman, disappears. Later a decomposed body, which may be Muller’s, washes up near Boston. Police determine that the man was shot in the head, suggesting an execution. Some speculate that Muller was really Hooded Justice and that Communist spies from East Germany had killed him. But whether Rolf Muller and Hooded Justice were the same man will probably never be known.
