| Reporter Happy Terrill covers Professor Styne’s balloon flight into the upper atmosphere. On the journey, a valve opens outside the balloon, and Happy volunteers to fix it. Outside in the upper stratosphere, Happy is subjected to such intense radiation that he is transformed into the golden god known as the Ray! Terrill soars off, and, when the balloon returns to the ground, he is reported dead! Not long after this journey, criminals shoot Professor Styne and steal his formula for a powerful new explosive. When the crooks leave, the Ray arrives and learns the details from the wounded Styne. Then the hero vanishes and reappears at the getaway car. Summoning his magnetic powers, the Ray stops their bullets, apprehends the villains, and gives Styne back his stolen formula. Happy Terrill can become the Ray through exposure to any radiance. The Ray’s powers seem to vary, but usually he can fly at great speeds by riding light and even transform himself into pure energy. The more light the Ray absorbs the stronger he becomes. Only long periods of darkness can rid the Ray of his incredible powers, until a light source supercharges the Ray once again. His enemies include Stradivarius, a deadly pied piper, Cadava the Crumbler, the pirate Captain Blue, and the Hindu mystic Bela Jat. |
