    Lancelot Strong was born Roger Fleming , the son of Cooper City scientist Malcom Fleming, who studies the human brain’s latent powers in order to make men "more than mere men". To achieve this end, he keeps his toddler son in a germ-free, expansive bubble enclosure, while feeding the youngster micro electric stimuli through a special helmet. However, Fleming’s colleagues are outraged by this mistreatment of the boy and threaten to turn Dr. Fleming over to the authorities. Dr. Fleming flees, taking his young son with him in a special trailer containing a scaled-down version of his laboratory experiment. Unfortunately, while trying to elude Communist agents after his secret, Dr. Fleming accidentally drives over a cliff! Only the child survives this horror. He is found by Abel and Martha Strong, who raise him as their own. Some years later, when Lancelot (the name the Strongs give him), now a young man, is out exploring, he chances upon the wreckage of his father’s van. Lancelot finds his father’s notebooks and learns of his great powers! He is superhumanly fast and strong, can survive extreme temperatures or long periods without air, see in the dark, generate lightning charges, and leap great distances! Lancelot also finds a costume which his father wanted him to wear as an adult so that he could "protect mankind from the forces that would cause it harm." Drafted into the army as a private, Lancelot Strong becomes the Shield of America, protecting his homeland from the world’s dangers!
