The Chameleon

    Like a thunderbolt, the criminal Chameleon spreads panic throughout the city of Eastport. Bill Norris comes to Eastport to represent a group of investors who wished to join a bond effort offered by the Eastport’s mayor. However upon arriving in Eastport, Norris finds that the bond measure is being cancelled due to the crimes of that master of treachery, the Chameleon! City Treasure Dorne warns Norris that it’s risky to invest in a crime-riddled city. Understandably, Norris takes his leave, all the while thinking that this is a great case for him to take on as the Grim Reaper.

    Meanwhile, Caleb, a young night janitor at City Hall, asks two girls out on a date only to be rebuked! Wandering the city streets, Caleb is almost run over by an out-of-control trolley car. Luckily, the Grim Reaper is on patrol and rescues him in time, then pursues the runaway trolley. Coming to the trolley’s end, the Grim Reaper discovers that the Chameleon caused this act of sabotage. The two fight, but, the Chameleon escapes, due to Caleb's interference. The Grim Reaper tells the mayor of his confrontation with the criminal, but the mayor says that at the same time as their battle the Chameleon struck across town. Perplexed, the Grim Reaper informs the mayor that he will stay in the city until he captures the Chameleon. Then the Grim Reaper departs for his rented residence.

    At City Hall, Treasurer Dorne bawls out Caleb for allowing him to slip on a bar of soap and skidding on his hands across the wet floor. Back at his rented house, Bill Norris is attacked by the Chameleon! Norris escapes this trap and discovers a set of fingerprints. The Grim Reaper and the mayor discover that these prints do not match those found at the other crime-scenes, but they do match Dorne’s! Now the Grim Reaper has figured out how the Chameleon appears to be in two places at once, but he can’t find the connection to Dorne. Leaving the mayor, the Grim Reaper runs into Caleb, who tells about his recent clash with Dorne. The Grim Reaper looks at the cleaning supplies, and everything clicks into place. Caleb leads the Grim Reaper to Dorne’s house, where they are attacked by two Chameleons! The Grim Reaper and Caleb defeat them. Then the Grim Reaper unmasks one of the two Chameleons to find out that he was right! Dorne is the Chameleon. The treasurer confesses that he employed three thugs as his stand-ins to cover his embezzling of city funds. The Grim Reaper has successfully completed another case, and Caleb has become a hero to the two girls who snubbed him!
