Hmm, an interesting, if kind of
creepy piece. Hawkman |

1940--in this year we find Carter Hall, a millionaire collector of ancient weapons, getting a parcel one day from his friend Jim Rock in Egypt. Carter Hall opens the package and finds in it a glass knife. Upon touching the knife, he becomes dizzy and passes out. While still unconscious, he dreams of a young Egyptian named Prince Khufu battling the forces of a priest named Hathset to thwart his plans for world conquest. After a great battle, the prince and his lover Shiera are slain by Hathset with the glass knife. The dream convinces Carter Hall that he is the reincarnation of Khufu and that a woman he bumps into on the street is Shiera. Surprisingly the girl, Shiera Sanders, has similar feelings. Carter fears that the evil priest may be reincarnated as one Doctor Hastor, who is responsible for electrocuting car loads of subway riders as a prelude to his bid for world conquest. Carter Hall creates a costume resembling the image of Anubis, the hawk god, with the aid of the gravity-defying "nth" metal and his great wings, made from webbing that Carter Hall had created in his home laboratory. [Note: The ancient Egyptian hawk-god was Horus, not Anubis, so this may be a chronicler's error.] The Hawkman, as he is calling himself now, flies out in search of the villainous Dr. Hastor and has his suspicions confirmed. Finding out that Hastor has kidnapped Shiera Sanders, Hawkman pursues the would-be world conqueror. He catches up with the evil Doctor and slays Hastor with a crossbow from his weapons collection. Hawkman continues to fight crime as the winged wonder, armed with his wings, his ancient weapons, and his feathered allies, for Hawkman speaks the language of birds. He is soon joined in his adventures by the woman he rescued, Shiera Sanders (see individual entry on Hawkgirl). Hawkman was also a charter member of the famed Justice Society of America and served as chairman of the group until they disbanded in 1951. Hawkman and Hawkgirl have a long and illustrious career as fighters for justice. |
