From out of the west come our next
man of mystery. The Vigilante |
Greg Saunders is known as the Prairie Troubador, a singing radio personality, who poses as a mincing drugstore cowboy but is really the hard-hitting crimefighter known as the Vigilante! Greg's story starts when his father is killed by a gang during a robbery. As he grew to manhood, Greg learned the skills and sterling qualities of his grandfather, an Indian fighter and stalwart frontiersman, as well as the courage of his father, a county sheriff. After his father’s death Greg decides that the only way to fight crime and criminals effectively is without the restraints of the law. As the Vigilante, Greg Saunders is an expert marksman with a handgun and a master of the lariat. His long-time girlfriend is blues singer Betty Stuart, who at first doesn’t know of the Vigilante’s dual identity and resents Greg for falling short of being a real man like his alter ego. But eventually Betty learns Greg's secret. Along the way the Vigilante acquires a young sidekick named Stuff, the Chinatown Kid, after the Vigilante's original partner, Billy "Pop" Gunn, retires (see individual entries). The Vigilante is also a member of the crime-fighting group known as the Law's Legionnaires or the Seven Soldiers of Victory and fights alongside these brave men while the group lasts. The Vigilante has a long and illustrious career lasting 13 years as a cowboy crimefighter. |
