Green Arrow

Oliver Queen, playboy millionaire, is on a pleasure cruise when the ship he is on is taken over by modern day pirates. Robbed, clubbed and thrown overboard for dead, the young man, still fit from his athletic college days, swims for hours until he comes upon the uninhabited Star Fish Island. There, using the skills he had learned from expert archer Howard Hill in Hollywood, Oliver fashions himself a bow and arrow from the local surroundings. He survives on berries for the weeks it takes him to become a proficient archer. Then while Oliver is camping out one day, the pirates who had thrown him overboard come to the island with a captured freighter. Oliver defeats the pirates and heads back to civilization with the crew of the freighter.

Some time later while on a gold hunting expedition in Lost Mesa, Oliver comes across a young lad named Roy Harper, who is also proficient in archery. Together the two archers defeat a local threat that has arisen. The two head back to Star City, home of Oliver Queen. Roy, who is now an orphan, becomes Oliver's ward. The daring bowmen become the crime-fighting duo known as Green Arrow and Speedy (see individual entry), and they have a long and illustrious career. The Battling Bowmen also join the superhero group known as the Seven Soldiers of Victory or the Law's Legionnaires, with whom they fight side by side for several years. In their adventures they meet up with a few female archers. One is called Queen Arrow (see individual entry), who appears only once. The other lady archer, Miss Arrowette (see individual entry), aids the Battling Bowmen several times.

The pair fights the criminal element of their city and other parts of the world as well, inspiring the heroes known as the Green Arrows of the World (see individual entry). These individuals were archers from several different countries who used Green Arrow as their role model.
