The Heap

Our strange tale begins in World War I when the crack German air force knows its greatest glory, and the rest of the world marvels at Teutonic air daring. But in a desolate Polish swamp comes a threatening creature hitherto unknown to the world, a creature that was born because a man refuses to die! This man’s misfortunes result in the shaggy monster known as the HEAP!

At a German airfield during World War I...

"I can't believe it! Our great Von Emmelman...dead!" exclaims a German officer to one of his flyers.
"Yes...I saw him go down...in the great Polish swamp..." replies the flyer.
"Von Emmelman was so gallant! He often swore he would live to see us victorious!" the German officer comments.
"And now he lies out in the lonely swamps like some forgotten thing!" the flyer adds as he sips his beer.

Yes, it looks like the end of the trail for Von Emmelman. But, what is this?! Several years later, a shaggy hulk that moves like a man wanders about the desolate Polish swamps. This creature’s body has merged with the vegetation. The Heap's only food is oxygen, oxygen that he will take from the bodies of other creatures when necessary. For even like a great plant, the Heap must live! And so, for this monster the years move on. Observe the Heap, that half-human, half-plant creature born of the union of natural vegetation with the half-lifeless body of a downed flyer. For the shaggy, shambling Heap--the creature that is neither animal, vegetable, nor man--is out there waiting for you!
