Ooohhh! The Spectre |
|
1940 "Gat" Benson and his gang get their criminal hands on Jim Corrigan and his girlfriend Clarice Winston. Jim is knocked off in classic gangland fashion by being tossed into the river in a cement barrel! His spirit ascends into the great beyond where a celestial "Voice" informs him that his mission on Earth is unfinished. He shall remain earthbound to eradicate crime with his great supernatural powers. He can grow to gigantic proportions or shrink down to a size small enough to travel across telephone wires. He can also fly, hypnotize his foes, and disappear into a puff of smoke. And, since he is already dead, he cannot be killed. But as a ghost in the material world, the Spectre, as he now calls himself, is not alive, but merely a ghoulish presence that can take on the form of his former human self, Jim Corrigan. Thus, he decides to break off his relations with his still-living girlfriend Clarice Winston. The Spectre battles all evils, big and small, meting out the supreme punishment for those evildoers who deserve it--death! For the Spectre shows no mercy where no mercy is shown! So strict is his code that criminals everywhere fear the dreaded Spectre. Eventually the "Voice" allows the Spectre to retrieve his human body and live in it both as a reward for his great deeds and because his friend and aide Percival Pop almost finds Jim Corrigan’s body and discovers his secret. The Spectre is also a charter member in the Justice Society of America, serving with these brave souls for many an adventure. Over time the Spectre operates without the use of Jim Corrigan's body as a host. In 1945, for reasons unknown, the Spectre mysteriously disappears from the crime-fighting scene. |
