Richard Henry Benson, his wife Alicia, and their daughter Alice live in hotels around the world. They happen to be in Buffalo, New York, when they learn that Alicia's mother is dying. Accustomed to getting what he wants, Benson forces his way onto an airplane bound for Montreal. Retiring to the lavatory once they are underway, he returns to discover that his wife and child are gone. The other passengers insist that Benson has boarded the plane alone. The shock snaps something in Benson's mind, and he is hospitalized. When Benson comes to, he finds that his jet-black hair has turned snow-white and that his sun-bronzed flesh is now "white as linen," while his face has become a wax mask. But his steel gray eyes are the same—emotionless! Moreover, he finds that he can move and mold his face like putty. Convinced that he has been the victim of a crime, Benson decides to apply his skills and unique physical abilities to combating the underworld. Thus begins the career of The Avenger. The Avenger has two weapons that he uses extensively: "Mike," a four shot .22 caliber revolver with high velocity shells, accurate at 200 yards, and "Ike," a hollow-handled, perfectly balanced dagger. Benson also carries a makeup kit, which contains flesh-like grease paint, wigs and other items used to create disguises. His headquarters in New York consists of an entire block-long street, called Bleek Street. The Avenger also has a group of assistants whom he has dubbed "Justice Inc.," to aid him in his quest against the forces of evil. They are: the big Algernon Heathcote (Smitty) Smith, the tall Scot Fergus MacMurdie, pixyish Nellie Gray, and Josh and Rosabel Newton, a black husband-and-wife team. A later aide is the dashing Cole Wilson. Together they roam the world in search of danger and intrigue, fighting for justice. |
