Mr. Terrific

January 1942

Bored Terry Sloane, successful at all he's ever endeavored, has driven to a bridge to contemplate suicide. As a child, Terry Sloane was an all-around prodigy. At the age of ten, he developed a seaplane, which the Navy put into production. A year later he graduated high school, and by age 12 Terry received an honorary college degree, because there was nothing his professors could teach him. And so it goes his whole life; success is too easy for him. Now on this dark and lonely bridge, instead of killing himself, he rescues a woman Wanda Wilson from committing suicide herself. Inquiring why she would want to kill herself, Terry learns the heart-rending story of her kid brother Billy, who has fallen into criminal activity with his friends. At her wit’s end and not knowing what else to do, desperation has brought her here to this bridge. Deciding that crime-fighting would relieve his boredom, Terry Sloane invents a disguise as Mr. Terrific, champion of fair play! Gathering up Billy and his wayward friends, Mr. Terrific beats up the Big Shot Gang in front of the boys. So impressed with the feats of the new crimefighter are the boys that they dub him "Mr. Terrific." With his help, the boys establish a do-gooder organization, the Fair Play Club. Mr. Terrific goes on for several years as the Human Dynamo who is Stumped by Nothing. He is also a trial member of the esteemed Justice Society of America.
