The Flame

Summer 1914 to July 1939

When a great flood strikes the village where he is stationed, Reverend Charteris, an American missionary in China, tries to save his young son by sending him down the river in a basket. The boy is washed ashore in Tibet, land of many holy men and heroes, and is found by a sect of lamas, who raise him to manhood and teach him their greatest magic secret, the power over flames. One day, explorers come to the monastery and discover that the young Occidental is the son of the now deceased Reverend Charteris. They convince the young man to return home and use his great gifts for mankind, for the world is in dire need of his talents and abilities. Once his training is done, he is sent to America to battle the great evils present there. With his great power over fire, he becomes the Flame, Champion of America.

Adopting the identity of Gary Preston, wealthy philanthropist, he wages a campaign against crime along with his companion Linda Dale. Bullets cannot harm the Flame; they melt on contact! He can materialize from any fire source, whether it’s a fireplace, a lit match, or the flame of a brazier. Moreover, he possesses the Flamegun, a directional source to channel his flame abilities. He can create fire ladders, walls of flame to keep enemies out, and balls of fire to hurl at his opponents. When no convenient fire source is available, The Flame can be seen driving in his red and yellow super-sports car or flying through the air in his propeller-powered plane.

Later in his career, he discovers the ability to burst into flames. Sensing that his new power is an omen, he trains Linda Dale to be his student and partner in the fight on crime as Flame Girl (see profile on Flame Girl), and together they fight the good fight for justice.
