J'onn J'onzz
Martian Manhunter II

In November of 1954, Professor Mark Erdel builds a robot brain designed to explore other worlds and dimensions. However, when Professor Erdel first uses his machine it accidentally teleports a Martian native to Earth! So startled by the Martian's sudden arrival is he that the good Professor has a heart attack and dies on the spot, stranding the Martian on Earth. Realizing his precarious position after monitoring Earth's news channels and seeing that the people of this planet are frightened of all things "foreign" and "different," the Martian named J'onn J'onzz uses his unique ability to shape-change into an earthling and blend in with the populace. Under the assumed name of John Jones, the now human-looking Martian joins the local police force as a detective so he can better learn about and understand his newly adopted planet.

In his Martian form, J'onn J'onzz can become invisible, wield superhuman strength, and fly. He also has x-ray vision and mental powers far beyond his Earthly counterparts. This Martian Manhunter becomes a force for good, fighting crime and corruption in America, all the while hiding his noble deeds from the public at large.

The Martian Manhunter, while nearly invulnerable, has just one weakness, fire. Whenever he is near it or exposed to it, J'onn loses his unique abilities and becomes very weak. If exposed to it long enough, the Martian Manhunter could die from the deadly flame. Operating secretly for most of the 1950's, the Martian Manhunter was a potent force for good in the world.
