The Spirit

The Spirit was born and died on June 2nd, 1940. It began quite simply.

Young Denny Colt, criminologist and private detective, pokes his head into police headquarters and promises Police Commissioner Dolan that he will bring in the escaped criminal Dr. Cobra. What else can Dolan do but agree? Somewhere in the crooked narrow alleys of Chinatown, a figure darts from shadow to shadow and down through a manhole in the gutter. Before long, Denny Colt is drawing a pistol on his quarry. But in a struggle with Dr. Cobra the detective is caught in the flood of a smashed vat of experimental chemicals. He sinks to the floor, rigid and unmoving in a pool of eerie liquid. Minutes too late, Dolan and the police arrive. They find Colt and call the coroner. Denny Colt is buried the next day in Wildwood Cemetery.

Now the life of the Spirit is about to begin. A silent figure climbs from Colt’s grave and makes his way to Dolan's office to demand the reward money for Dr. Cobra. Dolan insists that the stranger step out of the shadows, but he refuses, telling Dolan simply to call him the Spirit. Later that night at the cemetery the Spirit forces a pair of crooks to reveal Dr. Cobra’s whereabouts. At the same time Dolan discovers the identity of the Spirit. He comes down to the cemetery on a hunch to make sure Denny Colt was dead. Colt explains how the chemicals induced a state of suspended animation resembling death. After he came to, he broke out of his grave. The Spirit captures Dr. Cobra, and afterwards, he reveals his plans. He will "remain dead" and take up the job of being the Spirit reaching the criminals that are beyond the reach of the law!
