Editorial

Hi Gang!

Just a few brief words to welcome you to issue # 6. You might have noticed that we've gone back to the previous way that we do biographies on the characters featured here. While we liked the features we did in the last issue, it is not always possible to offer you the viewership these blow-by-blow stories, simply because we don't own every book or story that we do a profile on. We think you will understand our position on this.

We have revamped our Companions and Criminals section to focus more on what is really relevant to the site. Remember, we eventually would like to have a permanent "home" for ALL the bio's that we have done, and will continue to do in the up and coming months ahead. Once again, we think you'll agree that this is a good move.

We have added a new feature to the site called "MYSTERY GUEST", where you, the scholars that you all are, get a chance to win free drawings by identifying the person featured in this section. If there are no winners for the month that the particular character is featured in, we will simply roll the entry over into the next month, along with a new entry, until someone gets it! Sound like fun? We hope so!

And finally, we have added a poll on our Index Page. The question is "Which GoldenAge company would you like to see highlighted?". Please take a minute and vote. Thanks.

Well enough of this, on to this months letters!

Bye now and you all be good, yah hear?
Richard Boucher

Here are the letters we received to our May Issue "DC Special".
Keep those letters coming!
=========================================

Well, this issue is certainly a change of pace. Although many of the characters appeared only once, the same could be said of a lot of "regular" Golden Age heroes. Still it is nice to explore the rich lore of the Superman and Batman series. How about an all Timely-Marvel issue some time, showcasing some of their more obscure characters? Jess Nevins does that on his site, but I'm eager for more.

Anyway, thanks for the new direction.

Anthony Bernardo

Hi Anthony,

Yes, this is/was a change of pace for us to do an issue like this. It took a long time to do this issue, so we're only going to go this route once in a while. Next issue we'll be back to our usual synopsis type/style information. You see, for this issue we had the actual books (for the most part) from where the stories come from, and normally we only have the info as gathered through our resources. But we're glad you liked it! And I agree that a lot of Golden Age good guys and gals (that were not part of the DC properties) had about the same exposure as our features in May, and we felt that people would want to see what type of "heroes and heroines" were around during the 1950's, (and we had a lot of request for an "All DC issue" to boot!) as there were a quite a few as you've seen from this issue, and there is more to come later on when we do this again. We will be doing a "Timely" special of sorts come the December issue, more on that later as we get closer to it.

Thanks for stopping by, and come on back for # 6 next month.

Take care. Your friends at Squadron Central,
Richard Boucher

Although I like the basic idea of the site, giving visual reference and background on the lesser known Golden age heroes for those of us who missed them the first time and can't afford to buy reprints, using these "one-shot" characters was a good way to showcase 50s heroes (of whom there were not many). Maybe another try at this format could focus on the Batmen of many Nations characters or other attempts at international heroes created for US comics.

Keep up the good work.
Anthony

Hi Anthony,

Well there are enough to do two more issues using DC characters (Batmen of All Nations, Green Arrows of the World, and the like!), and we do intend to do it again, probably next March, as we've everything pretty much planned out all the way to issue # 11 and # 12 will be a BIG special issue, to finish up the year with before we start Vol. #2. (with a special surprise for Y2k!).

So stick around, more fun to come!

Hi Richard, Darrin and Pam!

So far I've only had the time to read and enjoy the bios and artwork in the Roll Call section of the May issue. I always go there first. I've enjoyed it greatly. You've pulled some rather obscure SA DC characters out of mothballs and I hope that others enjoy reading about them as much as I did. Most, except Mysteryman, I had at least heard of.

As Richard probably anticipated due to our E-mail exchanges, my favorite in the Roll Call section was Batwoman (my first comic book crush *L*). Richard, your artistic rendering of Kathy Kane's alter ego was marvelous! She certainly leapt off the background, that is for certain.

Thank you for including renderings of both Miss Arrowette's costumes. I have World's Finest 134, but I have never seen her in her original outfit before. IAC... So far, so good *S*. I'm looking forward getting back to the rest of the issue later. No doubt you'll be hearing from me again soon.

Take care and Keep 'em Flying!
Jeff Beyrent

Hi Jeff,

It's always good to hear from you. You will have to let us know what you think of the Companions & Criminals" section for this month. We often wonder if anyone likes the text stuff we do (since there's no pics!) and if you guys & gals get anything out of it? We obviously had a blast bringing the lesser known DC characters out of mothballs for all to see, and so far it seems to be our most popular issue to date. Maybe we will make this an annual event, LMK what you think.

Thanks for the kind words on Batwoman, it's always hard for me to "do" the more well known ones and make it stand up to the pro's versions. I've always had a weakness for the Batlady too, plus that female feline Catwoman, two of my all time fav's. The yellow costume Miss Arrowette version is in debate at the moment, "I" remember a story from the '60's (okay I'm old!) that featured this costume, but a few people have said that it never existed, while one other person said it was a villainess version of Green Arrow. Anyone out there care to clear this up? The "main" pic is the outfit she appeared in for her three "known" appearances, which I have myself.

BTW, anyone remember DC's Birdman, and another character called AutomationMan (or something like that) if so let me know what issue(s) they appeared in, and you will be rewarded.

Also if we did do another all DC obscure issue, which characters would you all like to see? Write us and let us know.

Take care, and God bless,
Richard Boucher
