Magic Totem
Super-Girl

Superman's pal, Jimmy Olsen, knows the many good deeds Superman has done for humanity, but Superman always seems to be alone, dwelling in his Arctic Fortress of Solitude. Jimmy thinks to himself that, if he had a magic wish, he'd wish for a "Super-Girl" to appear and join Superman. But silly magic wishes are only in fairy tales. Are they, Jimmy? Perhaps not always! As Superman spies a landslide with his telescopic vision...

"An archeologist is trapped inside! Follow me as I bore a tunnel into the cave, Jimmy!" Superman says. Within the cave...
"I-I'm all right! I was studying these Indian relics when the landslide trapped me! How can I reward you, Superman?" asks the grateful archeologist.
"Well, just give Jimmy a souvenir after I return you to the city," replies the Man of Steel. That night, at Jimmy's apartment...
"Here's your souvenir, Jimmy! This ancient totem's inscription reads--`Once every century, Magic Totem grants three wishes, when jewel is rubbed under full moon!’ Pure superstition of course!" the archeologist tells Jimmy.
"I'll try it tonight...there's a full moon! Ha, Ha!" he laughs. When Jimmy is alone...
"Too bad it's only a silly legend! If it really worked, I'd rub the jewel and say, ‘I wish that a Super-Girl with super powers equal to Superman's would appear and become his companion,’" Jimmy thinks to himself as he rubs the jewel on the magic totem. Turning away with a laugh, Jimmy does not see the gem blaze strangely in the moonlight. It does come true, Jimmy, as a phenomenon unknown to modern science solidifies the radiation into an amazing form!
"Harken! The last three wishes were granted a full century ago. Thus it is time again. You are the first wish, Super-Girl! Go and join Superman on the morrow," commands the voice from the magic totem.
"I obey, totem spirit," replies the newly created form of Super-Girl.

Next day on his usual patrol, Superman spots a plane out of control, and he rushes to save the plane, when suddenly...ZOOM...WHOOSH!...

"Now I will join Superman," says the Magic Totem Super-Girl as she flies past the Man of Steel!
"Omigosh!! What made that terrific backlash of wind? I'll miss catching the falling plane!" cries out Superman. But another super-form takes over...
"I'm sorry I flew so fast that I upset you. But I'll save the falling craft! You see I am Super-Girl!" the red-haired beauty tells the Metropolis Marvel.
"Super-Girl? Am I...uh...dreaming? But I never knew you existed, Super-Girl!" the astonished Superman exclaims.
"I didn't...until last night. You see, Jimmy Olsen wished me into being when he rubbed the magic totem," she explains. "I have all your powers and will aid you in all your doings, Superman! As Jimmy wished, I'll be your CONSTANT companion."
The rightly stunned Superman replies, "...Well, I must thank him for his unselfish thought. Come along, Super-Girl, to the Daily Planet where Jimmy works!" And, with that, the two super-people fly off.
While they are en route, Super-Girl says: "Jimmy felt you were lonely and needed a lifelong companion. Are you glad I'm here, Superman?"
"Er...Let's not rush things, Super-Girl. You're quite the...uh, impetuous sort!" an embarrassed Superman replies.

Meanwhile at the office, Jimmy has brought his souvenir to show Lois Lane.

" ...Then I rubbed the gem, but of course...Lois...my wish for Super-Girl didn't come true," Jimmy explains to her.
"Goodness! I-I think it did, Jimmy, look!" a stunned Lois points to the sky. In flies Superman and Super-Girl arm in arm.
"Yes, Jimmy...meet Super-Girl!" The Man of Steel introduces her to the shocked pair.
"Holy cow!" Jimmy says in surprise. As soon as the super-pair leaves...
"Say, she's a peach, eh? Guess I didn't do a bad job of wishing, Lois," Jimmy brags.
"What chance have I anymore with Super-Girl around? They'll fall in love and get married...(choke)," Lois thinks to herself.

Consumed by her jealousy, Lois remembers another part of the inscription translated by the archeologist..."To cancel wish rub the magic jewel again!" she reads.
"Hah! I can rub the jewel and wish Super-Girl to vanish, saving Superman for myself," she contemplates. "But--but Superman won't have me anyway. It would be mean to take Super-Girl away from him...She'll make Superman happy... " Lois sobs to herself.

Happy, Lois? You might change your mind if you saw Super-Girl's next impetuous deed...

"A fire! I'll help Superman blow it out; twice as much super breath will douse it twice as fast, naturally!" thinks the Super-Girl. But Super-Girl's simple arithmetic is wrong!
"Great Scott! That was too much super-breath, Super-Girl! It blew the roof off the next warehouse!" chides Superman. As they swiftly chase it...
"I'm sorry! In my eagerness to help you, I created another problem. But we'll replace it," Super-Girl promises.
"Hmm...she means well, but I wonder if having a super-helper is as good as it seems?" Superman thinks. Soon when another emergency arises in a bank...
"A teller was accidentally locked in our vault. Use your heat-vision to melt the time lock, Superman," requests the bank owner.
Super-Girl conjectures, "With my rays added to his the metal will melt faster." But when the two super-powerful heat beams meet--BOOM!
"Yipes! An explosion!" cries out Superman.
"Luckily the clerk wasn't hurt. He's free...but the hard way. We'll have to repair the damaged vault," scolds Superman.
"Instead of less work, I'm making more work for you, Superman. I'm...sorry."

    After repairs...

"Cheer up, Super-Girl, there's a simple solution...We'll just separate," suggests Superman.
"Good idea, Superman. Working alone, I won't get in your way on super-jobs!" agrees Super-Girl. Later, on solo patrol Super-Girl spies sudden danger with her x-ray vision.
"Heavens! An elevator is falling...it's loaded with people!" the magic Maid of Steel exclaims.
"At super speed...I'll smash through the side of the skyscraper to reach the elevator shaft, and this time I won't be interfering with Superman!" she thinks.

    Guess again, Super-Girl!

"Oh, dear, Superman detected the same danger and came from the other direction!" Super-Girl says as she and Superman collide head on.
"ULPS! What did I hit? Don't tell me...I know...Super-Girl, of course!" the upset Man of Steel notes. The super-pair recovers barely in time as the elevator keeps dropping...
"Grab a cable and stop it, Super-Girl! Well, I hope we...er...don't meet at the same job later!" Superman comments as they save the day.

As they separate once again, an idea strikes Superman...

"Super-Girl has all my super powers, so why not let her handle things by herself? I'll get out of her way and carry on my work as Clark Kent! Now I'm being smart."

Or so Superman thinks! In his secret identity as Clark Kent, he joins Lois Lane on an assignment.

"We'll finish these interviews together, Clark."
Clark thinks, "This solves everything! If I give Super-Girl a clear track she can't possibly get in my hair...ha, ha!"

You laughed too soon, Clark! For, as luck would have it, Super-Girl flies past and pauses.

"Hmm, that face seems familiar somehow, could it be?...yes! My x-ray vision shows the uniform underneath!"
Super-Girl then says aloud, "Why, hello there, Superman!"
"Yipes! She did it again! Blurting out my secret identity...with Lois listening...(Gulp!)."
"Sorry no time to chat!...I see a man falling! See you later, Superman!" Super-Girl flies off on her rescue mission.
"Isn't that...uh...ridiculous, Lois? What made her...er...call me Superman?" Clark tries to wiggle his way out of his dilemma.
"Because you are Superman! You couldn't fool her x-ray eyes! Your secret is out, Clark!" gloats a happy Lois.
"How will I ever cover up? (Gulp)! Jimmy meant well in wishing for Super-Girl to appear, but she's turning out a...a super-menace!" the Metropolis Marvel complains to himself.

Later Clark changes to Superman and rejoins the Girl of Steel. He explains her latest misdeed...

"...So you see, Super-Girl, you gave away my secret identity! Now will you keep away from me and let me go on patrol alone?" the angry Superman demands as he flies away.
"You're angry, and I don't blame you, Superman. I...I haven't been a help to you, but a--a hindrance!...(Choke)." And the weeping Super-Girl remains behind.

Outside the city Superman spies danger...

"A washout along the tracks...and the Metropolis Express is coming!" notes Superman. Super-muscles enable the Man of Steel to avert calamity...
"The tracks will stretch enough for me to hold them above water until the train safely passes!" With his mighty strength, Superman lifts the tracks above his head. But, unknown to Superman, a plane has followed him piloted by vengeful criminals!
"AHA! We've been waiting for this chance! Now to drop this kryptonite near Superman. It's the only stuff in the world that will weaken him!" And, with that, the criminal lets loose the green rock in Superman's direction. More deadly than an H-bomb to Superman, the kryptonite lodges near him.
"Losing his super strength, he'll let the train crash! He'll never live it down...Ha, Ha!" gloats the crooks from the plane.
    "Kryptonite! Oh...getting weak...(gasp)!"

But luckily for Superman, the Girl of Steel has been watching him constantly with her telescopic vision...

"My super-breath blew the crooks’ plane down near the police. Now I'll remove the kryptonite, Superman! You see, not having been born on Krypton like you, I'm immune to the stuff!" Super-Girl says as she catches the falling kryptonite and carries it away from Superman.
"Thank heavens you can save me, Super-Girl!" the Man of Steel says gratefully. But why does Super-Girl stagger away, then fall?
"I...I lied to save Superman. Jimmy's wish made me an exact duplicate of Superman...thus...(Gasp!)...must... use...all my remaining strength to try and crawl away!" and with that the kryptonite-stricken Super-Girl makes her way back to Metropolis.

That evening as Jimmy hears a faint knock at his door...

    "Super-Girl! What's wrong?" ask Jimmy.
"Got here at last...held kryptonite too close... fatal...I won't recover!" the Girl of Steel relates to Jimmy.
"But I...I was no help to Superman anyway! It is best that I go! Rub the magic gem, Jimmy...please...so that I'll disappear...!" requests the sick Super-Girl.
"If...if you want it that way, Super-Girl!" Jimmy responds, as he rubs the magic gem in the totem.
"Farewell, Jimmy! Give my...my love to Superman (sob)!" she says to him.
"Good-bye, Super-Girl...(Choke)...We'll never forget you!" Jimmy cries out as Super-Girl is drawn back to the mysterious limbo from whence she came. When Jimmy tells the sad news at the office the next day...
"...So she gave her love to Superman then vanished!" Jimmy explains to Clark and Lois. Was this the end of the Magic Totem Super-Girl? Maybe one day she will return!
