The Mighty
Atom

In the fall of 1940, Al Pratt and his girlfriend Mary James are mugged by a group of criminals. Valiantly trying to protect Mary from the robbers only gets Al Pratt worked over. After being accosted, Mary jilts Al for being a "spineless little amoeba." All his life, from his uncle’s farm to a college campus, Al has always been taunted for his 5-foot height, often mocked as "Atom Al." But no more! Al sets out on a rigorous training routine and, with the aid of a local trainer Joe Morgan, is in no time a physical marvel! Thinking that he needs a disguise in order to fight crime effectively, Al Pratt dons a homemade costume, which he wears to a "costume ball" where he foils a robbery attempt, and re-christens himself the "Mighty Atom," defender of the weak and downtrodden. In his first adventure, Al rescues Mary from would-be kidnappers. The Atom goes on to fight for justice wherever he is needed. One day he is invited to join other "mystery-men" in a social dinner to share their knowledge of crime-fighting with one another. It is during this meeting that the Atom becomes a founding member of the famed Justice Society of America! He serves with this distinguished group of champions for many years as well as battling crime on his own. Later in his career, the Atom gains new abilities; he develops "atomic" strength and with his potent "Atomic Punch" becomes quite a force within the JSA. He also adopts a new uniform to fit his new power (as seen here). The Atom continues to fight for justice alone and with the Justice Society for many years, only to retire in the early 1950's.
